Each retreat is an authentic rite of passage, conducted in an energy field infused with sacred vibrations of healing and transformation. Shunyamurti’s potent brew of wisdom teachings, shakti transmission and transformational activities is sweet medicine for a soul longing for liberation from the illusion and pain of separation.
These week-long intensives offer a distillation of new – yet timeless – teachings about the most significant issues that concern our spiritual development. The advanced concepts shared in these events stretch one’s capacity to take in information that can be both challenging and liberating. Shunyamurti is the founder and yogic research director of the Sat Yoga Institute, headquartered in Costa Rica. His spiritual path has been a long and wide-ranging. Many years of meditation practice and training in numerous forms of yoga, including apprenticeship with Baba Hari Dass, ten years of vowed association with a Brahmachari ashram in India, a special resonance with Sri Ramana Maharshi and a deep study of Advaita and esoteric Shaivism and Buddhism, have been supplemented by the intensive study of western metaphysics, modern sciences, profound exploration of the dimensions opened by entheogens, transpersonal psychology, various forms of psychoanalysis and Jungian dreamwork, and the entire development of the perennial philosophy, including Taoism, Kabbalah, and mystical Christianity.
Since 2002, Shunyamurti has functioned as spiritual guide, retreat leader, and teacher of the Sat Yoga Ashram and Community, in addition to his ongoing advanced research in the Yogic sciences.

The Ashram Experience
A week at the Sat Yoga Ashram is an opportunity to experience life at its purest and best – filled with creativity, joy, wisdom and grace. Your mind will be astonished and your heart opened by the profound teachings and group processes. Your body will enjoy the physical yoga classes, the morning walks through sacred forests, and bathing in the clear mountain stream beside shimmering waterfalls.
You will return to innocence as you join in singing and listening to heart-opening music. You will remember again that you were born a poet as you participate in creative writing, improvisational theater games, drawing, and painting. You will relax so deeply you will feel reborn. You will understand how it felt in the Garden of Eden as you taste the delicious vegetarian food, most grown in our organic gardens and cooked superbly with love in our ashram kitchen. You will have time for yourself: to read, to journal, to reflect…time to be alone and time for lively conversation…there will be time to enter the Timeless.
A sample day at a Shunyamurti Retreat
- 4:00am – Early morning meditation with inspirational teaching
- 5:30am – Enjoy Arunachala spiced chai tea in the exquisite peace of the morning
- 6:30am – Sunrise yoga (asana) practice
- 8:00am – Silent breakfast of fresh fruits, green smoothie and other hot dishes
- 9:30am – Meditation & wisdom (gyana) class or outdoor activity
- 12:00pm – Personal free time
- 1:30pm – Delicious vegetarian lunch
- 4:45pm – Meditation & wisdom (gyana) class or creative expression class or activity
- 7:00pm – Dinner
- 9:00pm – Lights out!
We encourage external silence for the beginning part of each day, until 12pm.
Karma yoga (egoless service in community chores) is not reflected on this sample schedule, but in general new participants contribute 3 – 5 hours during the week.

Your contribution includes shared accommodations in one of our delightful cabins, all meals, and activities during your stay. Single supplement is available for an additional fee.
Mouth watering vegetarian and vegan meals that are integral to our ashram life and retreats. In our retreat we serve three hearty meals each day plus snacks. Dishes are created from organic produce grown in our own gardens or sourced from neighboring farms, or when necessary brought from the local feria (farmers market).
Nestled among flourishing gardens and cloud forests, our six comfortable bhavans (spiritual abodes), offer an ideal environment to embark on a profound inner journey. Each simple, yet tastefully designed, room provides comfortable sleeping space for one to three, with private single rooms often available upon request for a supplemental fee.
Our accommodations offer pleasant and spacious shared bathrooms as well as private balconies and large windows that overlook the natural beauty of the surrounding forests and gardens. The soothing sounds of flowing water and sweet songs of native birds (and sometimes the awesome howls of monkeys!) provide the perfect conditions for meditation and relaxation.
