Arts, Culture and Spirituality (Meditation) Weekend
Theater and the Healing Power of Truth
The Sat Yoga Ashram invites you to our Arts, Culture and Spirituality (Meditation) Weekend in November. This unique event will be a cathartic and transformative experience in which Shunyamurti will explore the relationship between art and spirituality, and how creativity can function as a catalyst of human and social transformation.
Art can bring new levels of meaning into our lives, and inspire us to attain our full potential. Gain the courage to hear the inner call and complete the sacred task of restoring human culture to the highest integrity and manifestation through the arts.
This weekend will focus in particular on the shamanic power of theater. The Sat Yoga Theater Group will stage The Seagull, the dramatic masterwork of the great modern Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. We will deconstruct the inner conflicts of the characters and discover the implications of the play on our own lives.
The Seagull is a particularly relevant play today, manifesting the tragicomic multidimensionality of our lives, the chaos and complexity, the fractal fragmentation, the oedipal enigmas, the struggle for freedom, the power of the unconscious the deadlocks of the narcissistic ego and the karmic shadow of Destiny—all presented with the unsurpassed humor and paradox of the master storyteller, the founder of modern theatre, Chekhov. The Seagull offers us a mirror that gazes into our deepest abyss of lack—and finds the spark of uncanny light that can ultimately deliver us from the evil that we harbor within.
This event is an experiment. We hope you will support our effort to bring such high culture theatrical performances to Costa Rica and to open our ashram to the public for a wider spectrum of offerings, in addition to meditation weekends and spiritual retreats. By attending this weekend, and telling your friends about the cultural renaissance that is happening at the Sat Yoga Ashram, you enable us to move forward with more such offerings that demonstrate the transcendent unity of art and spirituality.
The weekend will include:
- Deep silent meditations to greet the sunrise
- Profound, uplifting universal spiritual insights and teachings
- Time in nature to enjoy of silence and solitude
- In-depth discussions led by Shunyamurti regarding:
- The role of the arts, and theatre in particular, in personal transformation and the renaissance of culture

Mouth watering vegetarian and vegan meals that are integral to our ashram life and retreats. In our retreat we serve three hearty meals each day plus snacks. Dishes are created from organic produce grown in our own gardens or sourced from neighboring farms, or when necessary brought from the local feria (farmers market).
Nestled among flourishing gardens and cloud forests, our six comfortable bhavans (spiritual abodes), offer an ideal environment to embark on a profound inner journey. Each simple, yet tastefully designed, room provides comfortable sleeping space for one to three, with private single rooms often available upon request for a supplemental fee.
Our accommodations offer pleasant and spacious shared bathrooms as well as private balconies and large windows that overlook the natural beauty of the surrounding forests and gardens. The soothing sounds of flowing water and sweet songs of native birds (and sometimes the awesome howls of monkeys!) provide the perfect conditions for meditation and relaxation.
Our Ashram is located in the Pérez Zeledon region of southern Costa Rica, an estimated 4-hour journey (by car/bus) from the capital, San Jose. You can arrive with your own 4X4 vehicle, with a carpool or by a combination of bus and a taxi. We usually have pre-arranged carpool or bus groups that leave from San Jose the morning of the event. When needed, we use a reliable taxi service to bring guests to our ashram from the nearest town, San Isidro. Once you are registered for the event, you will receive more information about arrival and departure options from our registration coordinator, Amrita. If you are flying in to Costa Rica, we recommend that you arrive to the Juan Santamaría International Airport in San Jose (SJO) at least one day before the event starts. From there, you can spend the night in San Jose area or go directly to San Isidro where there are several hotel options.
