What is Maya?

Questioner: What is the meaning of Maya?

Shunyamurti's Reply: Maya means illusion. It refers to the phenomenal reality as a whole, as perceived from the egoic perspective. But it is more typically used to refer to the mind's creation of fantasies, projections, disturbing thoughts, bad moods, and other pathological psychic states. In fact, any ego narrative is maya. Everyone has their own signature patterns of Maya.

Questioner: It refers to negative states?

Shunyamurti's Reply: It refers to illusions and egoic reactions of any kind, so there can even be positive Maya; we call those attitudes the golden handcuffs. They can be just as bad. Such states as narcissistic pride and vainglory may feel positive, but they are not. And those egos who are socially productive, creative, and successful, sexually attractive and intelligent, may feel positive about themselves, but if they are not dedicated to disidentification from the egoic facade, the maya will impede the attainment of liberation and lead to eventual karmic blowback.
