Sat Yoga Institute and Ashram

Sat Yoga Institute, Costa RicaThe Sat Yoga Institute is a universalist non-sectarian and non-profit school for advanced studies in the transformation of consciousness, which is the original meaning of Yoga. Our school’s urban campus is located in Escazu, a suburb of San Jose, Costa Rica.

The Sat Yoga Ashram and Spiritual Retreat Center is our rural component. Located on the peaceful, remote, and sacred land of Arunachala, in the mountains of southern Costa Rica, our ashram is still under construction, but is already open and hosting monthly retreats for spiritual seekers from around the world.

Our curriculum emphasizes the ethical, cultural, scientific, ecological and spiritual integration and elevation of human beings to our highest potential, to enable us to be adequate to the challenges presented by our world today and to offer new solutions to problems by functioning at a higher level of  mature, compassionate intersubjectivity, and with the ability to think outside current paradigms, in new creative, holistic ways.

We are in the process of developing a sustainable agricultural base, and another kind of seedbank, and building housing for a permanent community of yogis who wish to live a simple, pure, spiritual life off the grid, in harmony with Nature and Spirit, to welcome the dawn of the next age.  Contiguous to the ashram we are building an eco-village for families, couples, and retirees who want to live near our ashram but not be Sat Yoga Ashram, Costa Ricacompletely immersed in it.

We function as a seedbank for the coming age, creating a microcosmic renaissance, a model community based on relationships of divine love, functioning in accord with the highest dharma.

In our school, we study the physical sciences, permaculture, the psychological and social sciences, and the world’s great spiritual and philosophical teachings, and we experiment with the various practices of ancient Yoga, including self-enquiry, prayer, alchemy, asana, pranayama, mantra, music, dance, guided and silent meditation, and bliss-infused contemplation.

We study Christian mystics and saints, Buddhist sages, Islamic philosophers, Jewish Kabbalistic spiritual writings, and those essential works of all other traditions, including Taoism, Sikhism, and tribal shamanic teachings. We focus particularly on the significance of Advaita Yoga, or non-duality consciousness, as taught by the lineages of Kashmir Shaivism and the Vedanta lineage of Gaudapada and Shankara to Ramana Maharshi.

People of all ethnicities and religions or no religion are welcome to join us. We are not affiliated with any religion and are not endowed financially, so we welcome all contributions to help us continue this unique educational and communal project.
