Final Preparations

As the world falls deeper every day into the infernal grip of the final days of kali yuga, ever greater spiritual efforts are required to remain serene and compassionate. Without adhering to a dedicated practice of meditation that keeps us centered in the light of true God-consciousness, it is inevitable that we will be sucked down into the vortex of negativity that is engulfing our sacred planet.

The final days of this age of darkness are upon us. We are approaching complete systems failure. Unless we are psychologically and spiritually prepared, the events that are occurring and those that are about to occur in the world at all levels can easily provoke rage, anxiety, and despair. The collective karma must strike us all. The financial system is failing us, the net of social services is full of holes, and the complex systems that provide energy of every kind are failing. The ecosystem itself is failing, as a result of wanton human failure to live in harmony with Nature. In our personal lives, karma can strike as the failure of the body in sickness, the failure of people around us to keep their promises, or to act responsibly, or for those who are not adept yogis, our own failure of others, and even more importantly, the failure of oneself, the failure to remain true to God. We betray our individual self and God when we do not act authentically. Suffering and torment follow as the night follows day.

Every failure can be traced back to a failure of love. This in turn results from a failure to remain in our true Being. This finally stems from the root failure to fulfill our divinely ordained imperative: to recognize, surrender to, and finally to embody the Supreme Self. The false self-system, the human ego, has rebelled against God for too long, and now faces the horrific consequences of our arrogant human power-trip on a planetary scale. The nature of the catastrophe that confronts our species has not yet been fully registered by many people in the West. Denial is tenacious. And the mass media work overtime to enforce the denial, stigmatizing and silencing those who dare to speak the truth.

But the blows of fate are increasing, the usual coping mechanisms are failing, and denial can turn in a moment to collapse. When that happens, the presence of accomplished yogis living in unshakeable serenity and wisdom will be essential for the preservation of human community and the restoration of divine values and capacities as part of the evolutionary imperative of our essential nature. All of us will soon realize the need to attain authentic God-consciousness in order to flow with the social paroxysms and mind-boggling geo-transformational events that are bringing this age to an end, and another to birth. No other medicine than faith and the purity and strength of soul that develop from deep and constant meditation and contemplative prayer will suffice to enable us to gain the safety of the higher Ground of our Supreme Being.

All this karmic chaos is occurring on Earth in order to awaken us to our cosmic responsibility. Transcendence of ego is not a luxury any longer, not something that can be put off for future lifetimes. We are now hitting the wall, and in the few moments we have left, we must make our final preparations for reunion with God. To do that, we must first re-discover our Buddha-Nature. The ego is being crucified once and for all time. To rise from the cross in this long night of the descent of the angel of death upon the Earth, there must be an utter letting go of all vain pursuits. The ego must aver its emptiness and futility. Detachment from all agendas other than surrender to the Absolute must ensue.

This is the first phase of the great return. Second, we must recognize that emptiness is our nature. We are nothing but empty consciousness, with nothing to hold onto. Everything that arises in consciousness passes away. This includes the body, the mind, and all that we hold most dear in the phenomenal realm. Only when we let go of all that we are grasping onto for identity and security, including the illusory sense of being a separate individual self, will consciousness enter the stream that carries presence into the liberation of nirvana.

But nirvana is not the end, only the beginning of the full awakening. In that eternal moment of full realization of emptiness, the two streams of life that had been separated into that of the matter/energy that comprises the objective field of phenomenal reality and the inner stream of consciousness that comprises the field of subjectivity, including the archetypal realm of platonic forms, the bardo states of the unconscious, and the subtle inner workings of the ego, are both seen to come together and return to their original nature as light and awareness. These streams regain their unity in a timeless moment of cosmic love, the glorious reunion of Shiva and Shakti after the great lila, the dance of time, is over—at least until the next begins.

In the instant of witnessing this consummation of the living lila, the overwhelming presence of God once more emerges from the background and rises as the Sun of Truth, the source and the destination of all beings in becoming in the spiral trajectory of Being around its own unmoving and eternal core. Those who can see beyond the near horizon of the bend of time will take appropriate action, guided by divine inspiration, to create an ecologically sustainable spiritual community, a Noah’s Ark, capable of floating on the waves of seismic shifting and species die-off, in a rarified frequency of consciousness that gradually calms and re-orders biophysical conditions in accord with the mandates of the Great Mother, Gaia, in her process of granting birth to a fitter brood than the current crop of humans, who have in the madness of the ego collectively violated the laws of life.

Those yogis who remain embedded in the collective urban social matrix will be called upon to offer last rites and extreme unction to the passing world of kali yuga and its terrified and bewildered inhabitants, to enable every soul to have access to the radiance of a transfigured being offering the salve of supreme compassion in the letting go of bodily existence and the return into the oneness of the inconceivable Being of whom all of us, even if unknowingly, partake.

Non-resistance to the will of God will be the hallmark and the only hope of those who seek salvation. In the surrender of the last drop of the ego’s separative consciousness, before outer conditions enforce that repossession, the heroic act of the Sat Yogi is to offer the body, mind, and spirit to the will of the Supreme One as an act of service, out of love. This is the only meaning left to salvage from the wreck that we have made of planetary life. The sooner that we make this sacrifice the greater the blessings that redound, as we become the channels through which divine light and life can once more flow. This has always been our destiny, as has been mapped out more or less completely by sages ancient and modern, in every culture. We need only think of Plotinus or Hermes from the ancient world, and such modern less than fully realized voices as Hegel, Schelling, Teilhard de Chardin, even Nietzsche, and more recently Deleuze, and perhaps the most eloquent contemporary Self-realized example having been Sri Aurobindo.

Our final preparations must include the complete sublimation of egoic tendencies. The desire to grasp and possess, the urge for recognition and power over others, the impulse to dominate and demand, the pent-up resentment, bitterness, complaint, refusal to cooperate, the stinginess and unwillingness to give to one’s community: all the third-chakra sanskaras must be transmuted. More difficult still for many, the second-chakra energies—the sexual and romantic phantasies and impulses—must be transmuted into love for God. And at the core of the ego, the terrors of annihilation and the even deeper drive toward death and nothingness as a way of escape from life, must be exhumed from the unconscious and transformed into the irresistible urge to die as an ego into the Eternal Flame of the Godhead.

This final death of the ever-dying ego enables the providence of the correct conditions for the manifestation of an avatar. Human life thus becomes transmuted into life that deserves the term divine. It is the divinization of our species that represents the next evolutionary step that alone will gain the assent of Gaia to flourish in her restored habitat of paradise for the ensuing eons of enjoyment of an enhanced existential range and depth, of astonishing intergalactic connections being created now by the transfinite web of cosmic super-consciousness. All this and more, transpiring beyond the ken of ordinary, and now obsolete, ego-consciousness, will be revealed as the denouement of our human drama unfolds toward its ultimate revelation.

There remains little time to make our final preparations. May you accept all blessings for the great adventure that lies before us, as we enter the age of immortal life.

Namaste,
Shunyamurti
